There’s something humbling about stepping away from what you’ve mastered to become a beginner again. As a DJ, I’ve spent years behind the decks, reading crowds, moving energy, and dropping the right tracks at just the right time. But recently, I made a decision that changed everything about how I approach my craft — I started taking weekly dance classes and Zumba.

At first, it was about fitness. I wanted to lose weight, feel better in my body, and get more active. But it quickly turned into something way deeper. Dance has opened up a whole new world for me. It’s not just about movement; it’s about understanding how people move, why they move, and what songs make them light up — or freeze in confusion.

I’ll admit, I used to think certain tracks were guaranteed dancefloor bangers. But the moment I stepped onto that studio floor, everything shifted. Songs I swore were easy to groove to left me tripping over my own feet. There’s a big difference between hearing a beat and feeling it in your body. This realization was humbling — and incredibly valuable.

Taking these classes has been one of the best things I’ve ever done, not just for my health, but for my DJ career. I’m no longer just the guy on the mic or the one dropping the bassline — I’m in the mix with the crowd. I’m learning firsthand what it feels like to follow the rhythm, to catch choreography, and to just let go and have fun. I’m now better at reading the crowd because I’ve become part of it. I see the music through their eyes — and that’s changed the way I perform forever.

I’ve also found community in these classes. There’s a unique energy in a room full of people dancing together, cheering each other on, laughing at missed steps, and celebrating every small win. It’s helped me reconnect with the joy that first made me fall in love with music and movement.

If you’re a DJ, performer, or anyone who lives behind the scenes — I can’t recommend this enough. Step out from behind the booth and into the crowd. Dance. Move. Learn. It’ll not only make you better at your craft — it’ll make you better at connecting with the people you’re there to serve.

Here’s to growth, sweat, and stepping in time with the music — one class at a time.
